This is the smaller version of Vasarely's very rare post-war ad for Air France: a Lockheed Constellation approaching Rio, the reflected rays of the sun mimicking runway landing beacons guiding the plane towards the night lights of Rio just visible in the far distance. The sunset silhouettes of Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado with the statue of Christ the Redeemer atop, positioned along a curved line give a wonderful sense of depth and distance, the viewer travelling to the very edge of the horizon. It is a very skillful design.
This is the only poster designed for Air France by Victor Vasarely, a significant and acclaimed artist, widely acknowledged as the leader of the “op art” movement. The poster is un-backed and has been kept flat. It is in near mint condition.
