Genre: Travel / Tourism
Title:  Australia Land of Tomorrow
Year:  1948
Artist:  Joe Greenberg
Size (cm):  76 x 101
Country of origin: Australia

Commissioned in 1948 and issued by the Commonwealth Department of Information, the poster was part of the post-war drive to encourage immigration to Australia. With a print run of 75,000 the poster was widely distributed across the displaced persons camps and hostels in post-war Europe 1949~51.

Greenberg’s idealised design aimed to give rural life in Australia a familiar feel to a largely European audience. It conveys a playful sense of stability and security, a rural idyll. The contrast for many who saw the poster in post-war Europe must have been compelling.

The poster is in reasonable condition. Printed on exceptionally thin paper there are the usual impact creases and nicks along the edges and areas of very small paper loss. Fortunately these are restricted to the margins and do not impact the body of the poster.

“Australia Land of Tomorrow” is a culturally important poster that forms part of the collection at the National Library of Australia, the National Maritime Museum and several state museums.
