Valencia’s largest festival, internationally known and added to UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage list in 2016, “Las Fallas” takes place each March to welcome the end of Winter and coming of Spring. The festival can be traced to the Middle Ages with the burning of elaborate effigies the main centrepiece.

Luis Vicario used the pen name “Gil”, seen here below the globe. The poster beautifully captures the smokey heat of the festival bonfires, whilst the silhouette of the bat above the crown gives a slightly chilling feel. Recognised as an academic, illustrator, art critic and poster designer, Vicario’s work has most recently featured in a 2018 retrospective in Spain.

Folds are clearly visible and some fatigue to the paper has occurred where the folds converge. Minor paper loss affects both  the upper and lower left corners but does not extend into the main body of the poster. There is some pencil text in the lower/middle part of the poster & for this reason it has been heavily discoubted. Overall the colours retain a strong vibrancy and depth.
