The Folies Bergère (est.1869) remains among the most famous and prestigious Parisienne nightclubs. Past performers included Chaplin, Josephine Baker (the only American born woman to receive full French military honours at her funeral for her WWII work in the Resitence) and Frank Sinatra.
Perhaps rather more risque by 1950's standards, Pierre Gilardeau, using the name “Okley”, produced a charming and enticing image for this revue. Along with Rene Gruau he is considered one of the foremost designers of nightclub, pin-up artwork. His later nightclub work was far more graphic, tracking the relaxing social norms through the 1960's and 70's.
This is the smaller version of the poster which was also produced with a black background. Small pin holes are evident in three corners and the lop tight corner above the “F” is missing as shown. Other wise the poster remains in good condition, with bright colours. It has been conservation mounted on Japanese paper and linen.
