Frank Sherwin’s work is considered among the very best of the artists and designers working for the various UK rail companies during the C20th. In much demand, Sherwin produced work for GWR, LMS, LNER and later British Rail.

His design for “Seaford” captures the Sussex landmark well, with the small figures on the beach juxtaposed against the height of the cliffs. His use of blocks of flat colour echo the pre war style and present a compact and realistic image free from the romanticism that typifies many of the 1950’s railway posters. This is an excellent example of Sherwin’s work: his posters and carriage prints remain popular and sought by collectors.

The poster is complete but has been folded with creases and fold lines evident. There is a very small area of loss in the upper quarter where the folds have converged. The poster would benefit from some slight conservation work but overall the poster is in very reasonable condition: the colours retain their depth and vibrancy and the fabric of the paper is generally good.
