Title: Visit The English Lakes
Year: c. 1930’s
Artist: R.A. Praill
Size (cm): 63.5 x 101.5
Country of origin: UK
A serene view across Buttermere towards the majestic Haystacks in the heart of the English Lake District. This is a tranquil and inviting design, which conveys its message effectively. It is a lovely example of that use of layered blocks of colour used here to great effect to give not just a sense of depth in the background, but also gentle, shimmering, fluid movement in the foreground – simply wonderful.
Sadly the designer, Reginald Praill, has proved hard to research. Noted for his poster designs during WW1, Praill produced several posters for LMS and LNER during the 1920’s~30’s, but seems to have been eclipsed in the histories of the “golden age” of railway posters by more prolific designers. Regardless this remains an outstanding example of the art form from the 1930’s. For anyone who has ever visited the English Lake District it is an enchanting reminder of a magical landscape.
The poster is in very good condition. Unbacked, there are some very minor nicks and tears along the edges entirely consistent with a poster this age.
